Chaos, Coherence, and Intimate Conflict

I recently ran across a quote by Ram Dass. It goes: 

"A relationship based on truth follows the very fine line between chaos and cosmos." 

It hit me hard. If there’s one place where energy feels turbulent—unpredictable and even maddening—it’s in intimate relationships.

Right now, my husband and I are navigating a therapeutic separation.

We’re in the process of unraveling and consciously reweaving the threads of our relationship. Each of us is examining how we show up, how our individual “threads” interact, tangle, or strengthen the whole.

This has meant holding space for my own experience while also holding space for his.

It’s a practice of seeing both my needs and his with a kind of detached compassion, using that space to make conscious choices. Some of these choices are small—how I respond in a single moment of tension. Others feel huge, raising questions about our future.

In moments of intense conflict, when emotions flare and the energy between us feels chaotic, I turn to self-witnessing.

It’s not easy.
